Why there is nothing to fade

With no pigment involved, there is no dye to break down over time. The image is a physical change in the wood rather than something applied to it.

What it means for the photograph

The result is monochrome, using the wood’s own two tones. A photograph chosen for its colour will not survive that, so choose on expression or contrast instead.
