Black and White Photo Restoration

Unlike a colourisation, a black and white restoration photo frame leaves the picture as the photographer took it and only what time has done to it. Upload a clear scan of the original and choose the frame size. Tone, contrast and damage are corrected; nothing is invented.

The restoration process

1. Tone is rebuilt first, because a faded monochrome print has lost its blacks and its whites at the same time.
2. Spotting and mould marks are removed, working outward from the faces.
3. Tears and creases are rebuilt using the surrounding grain, so the restoration does not read as a smooth patch.
4. The finished file is printed on photo paper, glossy as standard.

Why some photographs should stay monochrome

A well-exposed black and white portrait carries information in tone that colour would flatten. Studio portraits from the 1940s and 1950s were lit for monochrome, and colouring them often makes them look less real rather than more. What condition does to the result

The honest limit is the original. A sharp photo frame with surface damage restores almost completely. A frame that has gone soft, or one photographed on a phone at an angle, restores only as far as the detail that is actually there. Send the flattest, sharpest copy you can make. Sizes and finish

Photo frame run from 12×15 up through 16×20, 20×24, 24×36 and 30×40 inches. Glossy is standard and matte can be requested at extra cost. A 1 inch brown synthetic frame is optional. A colour original with a cast belongs in our colour to colour restoration instead.

How long does restoration take?

Three to five business days, depending on the condition of the original.

I only have a phone photo. Can it be used to make a frame?

Often yes. Shoot it flat, in even light, with no shadow across the surface.
