Unlike a tri fold, where one panel tucks inside the other, a z fold brochure folds in opposite directions so the sheet opens out like a concertina. Six panels, no tuck. Personalise every panel with your text, images, brand colours and QR codes.
What the concertina is good at
Because nothing tucks in, all three panels on one face can be read as a single strip. That suits a timeline, a step-by-step process, a route map or a product range shown side by side. Content that has an order gains from a fold that keeps the order visible.

The catch with a z fold
It does not stand up as neatly in a rack, and it needs a firmer sheet to hold the two opposing creases. We would put a z fold on 170 or 250 GSM art paper rather than on 100 GSM standard paper for that reason.
A z fold against a tri fold
Both have six panels. The tri fold brochure reveals its content in stages, which suits a sales pitch. A z fold shows everything at once, which suits reference material somebody will keep. That is the whole distinction.
